How ‘Omo Mose’ Transformed My Career: Olatoun Olanrewaju on Sacrifice, Mentorship and Yoruba Cinema

How ‘Omo Mose’ Transformed My Career: Olatoun Olanrewaju on Sacrifice, Mentorship and Yoruba Cinema — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Barakat Olatoun Olanrewaju, popularly known as Omo Mose, is a filmmaker, actress and executive producer in Nollywood’s Yoruba sector. Her passion for acting began in secondary school when she joined the Moroof Olayiwola Acting Group in Oyo. That early experience fuelled her love for storytelling and performance. In 2008 she joined veteran filmmaker Oladele Mati to refine her craft. Driven to tell her own stories, she established Matfad Production to mentor emerging talents and showcase her unique creative vision. Olanrewaju believes Yoruba films now enjoy growing acceptance thanks to their cultural richness and authenticity. She refuses to be limited to one type of role. As a mother of two from a polygamous family, she credits discipline and strict time management for balancing her career and home life. Reflecting on her journey, she calls Omo Mose the most challenging yet rewarding role of her career. She also highlights Agesinkole 2 as a key milestone and looks forward to collaborating again with Funke Akindele. Her proudest achievement remains nurturing young creatives and sustaining quality storytelling despite industry challenges.

They say her early acting group experience fuelled her passion, but it feels like there's more to the mentorship story than they're letting on.

I'm not sure her rise was all selfless; plenty of producers thrive on connections more than any stage troupe discipline.

Focusing on steady skill-building through workshops and networking, just like her early group days, could be a game changer for aspiring filmmakers.
