Lai Mohammed Denies Christian Genocide Claims in Nigeria

Lai Mohammed Denies Christian Genocide Claims in Nigeria

Former Information Minister Lai Mohammed told students at Abbey College Cambridge that reports of a targeted campaign against Christians are false. He described claims of religious persecution and genocide as “fake news” and urged greater understanding of Nigeria’s complex security challenges. Mohammed explained that Boko Haram began by attacking Muslims who embraced Western education and only later targeted Christians to draw wider attention. He also rejected the idea that banditry in the north is religion-driven, noting that most victims and perpetrators share the same faith and ethnicity. He challenged anyone to prove there is a policy of religious violence in Nigeria.

Do you know what specific data or examples he cited to refute those genocide claims?

I'm not sure he offered any concrete data. His talk seemed to rely on broad statements, not detailed evidence.

Claiming genocide reports are fake news sounds dismissive of real fears many communities express about ongoing violence and persecution.

I no dey convinced that calling these reports fake news is enough to solve the distrust among different faith communities.

Practical measures like independent monitoring, transparent data sharing, and community dialogues could help verify claims and build trust across religious groups.
