On June 12, 1993, Nigerians went to the polls to choose between MKO Abiola of the SDP and Bashir Tofa of the NRC. In the North Central, Abiola won 56.08% (1,315,743) against Tofa’s 43.92% (1,031,387). The North East and North West favored Tofa with 52.82% and 57.27% respectively, while Abiola led in North Central. In the South, Tofa edged Abiola in the Southeast with 51.66% to 48.34%. Abiola won both the South South (51.24%) and South West (84.94%) regions. Across Nigeria, Abiola secured 58.36% of the vote (8,341,309) to Tofa’s 41.64% (5,952,087), out of a total of 14,293,396 ballots cast.
