Avoid Fake Job Offers: A Quick Verification Guide

I know how easy it is to waste weeks chasing bogus vacancies in Nigeria. Use this simple checklist before you apply or show up. Red Flags (don’t ignore): 1) Only “Chat me on WhatsApp” – no official email or website 2) Any payment request (training, registration, ID card) 3) Generic Gmail/Yahoo address with no company domain or verifiable address 4) Vague role, unrealistic salary, urgent “start tomorrow” pressure 5) No recruiter name or company registration details shared Verify in 10 minutes: – Google the company name with “scam” or “review” and check LinkedIn profiles – Request the official job post link on their site or a verified LinkedIn page – For in-person interviews, ask for building name, full address and HR contact – For remote roles, confirm the communication tools and company email domain Sample message to send: “Hi, thanks for the update. Please share: (1) company website or job link, (2) full interview address + landmark, (3) HR’s official company email, and (4) confirmation that no fees are required.”

That's right, unclear payment requests and generic email addresses always set off red flags for me.

It seems most bogus vacancies skip official email channels in favour of WhatsApp only, which should be an immediate warning sign.

Not every post asking for a small registration fee is fake; some legitimate agencies need minimal processing costs.

Always verify company details on official websites before sending any payment or personal documents, and crosscheck email domains carefully.
