Putting Akwa Ibom First: Securing the Ibom Deep Seaport Dream
What’s on my mind is the future of the Ibom Deep Seaport and why Akwa Ibom people must move past old debates and unite behind this project. I recognise the valid concerns from Oro communities about the original Ibaka location. Their petitions and studies have underlined how moving the port could shift economic opportunities away from Oro. But after expert reviews and a federal conclusion that the relocation was justified, the bigger risk today is losing investors altogether. Governor Umo Eno warned that without our collective support, investors may pull out and the project could be dropped. I believe he was challenging us to show we mean business. A functioning seaport would bring jobs, industries, trade growth and improved infrastructure across all LGAs—from Oron to Ibeno. After two decades of plans on paper, the real question is this: Do we keep arguing about the past, or do we secure a future where Akwa Ibom finally benefits from this strategic port?
