Kebbi Police Bust ‘Yan Vocal’ Cybercrime Ring, Debunk ‘Sai Mallam’ Terror Rumour

Kebbi Police Bust ‘Yan Vocal’ Cybercrime Ring, Debunk ‘Sai Mallam’ Terror Rumour

The Kebbi State Police Command has dismissed claims of a ‘Sai Mallam’ terror group in Argungu and Zuru Emirates. Investigations revealed no such organisation, tracing the panic to a cybercrime syndicate known as “Yan Vocal.” According to The Bureau Journal, the ring comprised mostly 19- to 24-year-olds who allegedly hacked social media accounts, created fake identities and used edited explicit videos to blackmail politicians, traditional rulers, business owners and others both in Nigeria and abroad. A targeted intelligence-led operation in Argungu town led to the arrest of 13 suspects accused of demanding up to ₦3 million under threat of publishing manipulated images. The police have reassured residents that no terror cell exists and urged Nigerians to safeguard their personal data and report any suspicious online activity as investigations continue.

Have any residents in Argungu or Zuru shared first-hand experiences of panic after the 'Sai Mallam' rumour spread online?

I've noticed authorities moved quickly from terror rumours to a cybercrime narrative, which could be more about managing public perception than facts.

Haha, they sure changed gears fast. Makes you wonder what's really driving their headlines.

It feels like blaming 'Yan Vocal' might let some officials off the hook for earlier intelligence failures.

Community leaders should organise local workshops to teach people how to verify online claims and avoid falling for such false security alerts.
