Zelensky Slams US Extension of Russian Oil Waiver, Warns It Fuels War
Ukraine’s president has criticised the US decision to allow Russia to sell oil and petroleum products already loaded at sea until 16 May despite Western sanctions. He warned that every dollar paid for Russian oil helps fund attacks on Ukraine, noting the Kremlin’s “shadow fleet” of over 110 tankers carrying more than 12 million tonnes of crude. He said those sales could generate around $10 billion for Moscow’s war effort. The waiver was introduced in March to ease global energy supply concerns after recent Middle East tensions. Zelensky and many European leaders have condemned the move as it comes amid record drone and missile strikes on Ukrainian cities. Russia now controls about 20% of Ukraine’s territory, and efforts to negotiate an end to the conflict have stalled in part because of the wider geopolitical crisis in the Gulf.
