Adolf Hitler: His Rise to Power, World War II and the Holocaust

Adolf Hitler led Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945. His dictatorship helped trigger World War II and oversaw the Holocaust, the genocide in which about six million Jews were murdered alongside millions of other victims. Born in Austria in 1889, Hitler moved to Germany after failing to gain admission to art school. After World War I, he joined the German Workers’ Party, later known as the Nazi Party, and built support through nationalist speeches, propaganda and promises to restore Germany’s power. Appointed chancellor in 1933, Hitler dismantled democratic institutions and became Germany’s absolute ruler in 1934. Germany’s invasion of Poland in 1939 began World War II. As Allied forces closed in on Berlin, Hitler died by suicide on April 30, 1945. Hitler remains widely studied as a warning of how economic crisis, propaganda, racism, antisemitism and unchecked political power can lead to dictatorship and mass atrocities.
