UK Hosts Former al-Qaeda Member-Turned Syrian President in Landmark Meeting

UK Hosts Former al-Qaeda Member-Turned Syrian President in Landmark Meeting — 1 of 4
1 / 4

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa met British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Downing Street on Tuesday. This marks his first visit to London since assuming the presidency. The meeting underscores a major shift in UK-Syria ties following the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. In July, Britain fully restored diplomatic relations with Syria, and it de-prescribed Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham—the rebel group al-Sharaa once led—in October. Al-Sharaa’s London visit is expected to clear the way for reopening Syria’s embassy in the UK and Britain’s mission in Damascus. Source: Middle East Eye.
