Power Crisis Deepens: Citizens Demand Adelabu’s Sack as Tinubu Proposes GAMCO
Persistent blackouts have plunged states into darkness, with generation stuck at 2,000–4,000 MW—far below the needs of over 250 million Nigerians. Discos blame low generation while Gencos point to gas supply constraints linked to N4 trillion debts. Households and businesses nationwide continue to struggle. Minister Adebayo Adelabu has apologised for the sector’s woes. President Tinubu has unveiled the Grid Asset Management Company (GAMCO) to inject new capacity, promising up to 150,000 MW into the grid. Yet many Nigerians say apologies and plans are no longer enough. Civil society leader Eze Onyekpere has called for Adelabu’s immediate removal. He argues the minister lacks vision and innovation and reminds Tinubu of his campaign pledge to revive power. Onyekpere insists a change in leadership, not just policies, is overdue. In contrast, Professor Wumi Iledare warns the crisis stems from governance failures, not ministerial incompetence. He urges a return to the original privatisation framework and decentralised regional markets. Stronger institutions, he says, will offer a lasting solution beyond any single individual.
