Niger Notifies ICC of Withdrawal, Exit Effective June 2027
Junta-ruled Niger has formally submitted its notice to leave the International Criminal Court. The court confirmed it received Niger’s withdrawal instrument on June 18. The decision follows last September’s joint announcement with Mali and Burkina Faso, which accused the ICC of serving neo-colonial interests. Niger’s exit will take effect one year after notification, on June 18, 2027, during which time it remains bound by ICC obligations. All three Sahelian states are under military rule after coups between 2020 and 2023. They face both deadly jihadist attacks and accusations of human rights abuses by their own forces. Founded in 2002 to prosecute war crimes and crimes against humanity, the ICC now counts 125 members. Major countries like the US, Russia, China, Israel and Myanmar are not members.
