Oyo State Schools Reopen After Month-Long Teachers’ Strike Over Abduction Fears

Oyo State Schools Reopen After Month-Long Teachers’ Strike Over Abduction Fears

Public primary and secondary schools across Oyo State resumed classes this week after a one-month strike by the Nigeria Union of Teachers. The union had suspended academic activities following the abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area. The state government assured improved security measures, including a joint task force patrol and upgrades to the Safe School Initiative. It also pledged efforts to rescue those still missing. During the strike, many students formed self-study groups to prepare for WASSCE, NECO and BECE. Some also took up apprenticeships to stay engaged. Teachers hope attendance will pick up fully by Monday as academic routines return.

You're right, regular safety drills, clear communication, and secure gates will help students feel more at ease.

It seems surprising a month-long strike was the only leverage for security demands, yet no alternative negotiations are mentioned.

I'm not convinced resuming classes alone ensures student safety without visible improvements in local security infrastructure and patrols.

Parents and community members fit organise daily walking escorts for pupils, and report any suspicious activity immediately to local authorities.
