FG Launches Drive to Empower 37,000 Women and Youth in Nigeria’s Dairy Sector
The Federal Government is rolling out plans to create economic opportunities for 37,000 women and young people across the dairy value chain. This initiative covers production, processing and marketing, and was unveiled in Abuja during a road walk to mark World Milk Day. The programme will target skills development, enterprise integration, cooperative strengthening, access to finance, technology transfer and sustainable livestock practices. It also includes the establishment of women-led milk aggregation and processing cooperatives, improved storage systems, mobile veterinary services and tailored extension support. Nigeria’s annual milk demand stands at around 1.7 million metric tonnes, while local production falls below 700,000 metric tonnes. Bridging this gap could cut the country’s $1.5 billion dairy import bill. The ministry stressed the need for strong collaboration among government, private sector and development partners to boost local output and enhance food security.
