Appeal Filed in Sweden to Unseal 1969 Biafra War Records

Appeal Filed in Sweden to Unseal 1969 Biafra War Records

An appeal has been filed at Sweden’s Supreme Administrative Court seeking the declassification of records from 1969 linked to the Biafran humanitarian crisis. The campaign alleges that the documents could reveal cooperation involving AB Svenska Shell, Shell, the Nigerian military government and the British Embassy in Stockholm to influence public opinion during the war. Swedish authorities had previously declined to release the files under national-security and secrecy laws. The legal action also identifies St1 Refinery AB as the legal successor to AB Svenska Shell. Campaigners say a ruling in favour of disclosure would allow historians, human-rights groups and the media to examine the unredacted records. Truth Over Empire Initiative says the case is part of its wider effort to document and preserve accounts of atrocities and injustices connected to the Biafran war.

Unsealing records could be important, but allegations should still be separated carefully from what the documents actually establish.

If the court releases anything, a clear public summary and access to the original records would help people assess them properly.
