Young Women Bear the Brunt as Lagos and Benue Lead HIV Cases – NDR Report
The National Data Repository (NDR) has released updated HIV statistics for Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The report covers detection, treatment and viral suppression. According to NDR data, 95% of people living with HIV now know their status. Of these, 95% are on treatment, with over 1.6 million patients across 1,997 health facilities. Among those on treatment, 95% have achieved viral suppression. A ten-year trend shows new cases rising from 228,014 in 2016 to a peak of 464,355 in 2020, then falling sharply to 21,389 in 2026—a 90.8% drop from the previous year. Recent data reveal young women face disproportionately high infection rates across almost all age groups. Lagos and Benue lead with the most new cases, highlighting the need for targeted, age- and region-specific interventions to sustain progress in HIV control.
