Governor Makinde Imposes 48-Hour Curfew in 10 Oyo LGAs After Kidnappings

Governor Makinde Imposes 48-Hour Curfew in 10 Oyo LGAs After Kidnappings

Governor Seyi Makinde has ordered a daily curfew in ten local government areas surrounding Old Oyo National Park. This measure follows the abduction of 39 students and seven teachers in Oriire LGA last month. The curfew takes effect on Wednesday, June 24, and will run from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. for an initial 48 hours. The directive was issued by the Secretary to the State Government and communicated through the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary. The affected councils are Oriire, Orelope, Irepo, Saki West, Saki East, Atisbo, Itesiwaju, Iseyin, Olorunsogo and Atiba. Residents are required to remain indoors during curfew hours while security agencies enforce the order.

With daily curfew enforced from 4pm in those ten LGAs, how do residents plan to adjust their routines and stay safe?

True, leaving work earlier and planning errands by noon will help. We also need community watch and group travels.

Imposing a 48-hour curfew might slow down kidnappers, but curfews often disrupt livelihoods more than they deter serious criminals.

Predictable 4pm curfew starts could give criminals a reliable window, so this measure alone might not reduce kidnappings.

Local communities should coordinate with security agencies to share timely information and establish neighborhood watches during the curfew hours.
