Abandoned ₦40bn Ebonyi Airport: Unsafe Runway and Leaking Terminal
The ₦40 billion Abakaliki airport in Ebonyi State, delivered under former governor Dave Umahi, remains unused for regular flights. A test landing reported a dangerously bumpy runway, leading to its abandonment. Governor Francis Nwifuru has since budgeted ₦2 billion to repair the runway and ₦16 billion to fix a leaking terminal roof. Despite these funds, the terminal building still floods and currently hosts only church services. Critics say this project adds to a pattern of expensive yet underused infrastructure in the state, alongside other controversial “white elephant” ventures.
