FG Approves Historic NYSC Overhaul: Uniform Redesigned, Civilian Leadership Introduced
The Federal Executive Council has given approval for a comprehensive overhaul of the National Youth Service Corps. This is the first major review of the scheme in its 53-year history. Key changes include a redesign of the NYSC uniform and a shift to civilian leadership for the programme, while the military will continue to handle security for corps members. The reforms aim to reposition NYSC as a skills-focused, productivity-driven institution aligned with the Federal Government’s economic agenda. The council has directed the Attorney-General and the Ministry of Youth Development to amend the NYSC Act and relevant regulations to provide legal backing for these changes. The Minister of Youth Development described this as a holistic transformation that will equip young Nigerians with the skills and opportunities needed to thrive in a fast-changing world.
