ECOWAS Secures Release of Five Nigerian Onion Trucks Detained in Ghana

ECOWAS has secured the release of five Nigerian trucks carrying onions that were detained at Kotoku Market in Ghana. The trucks had been held since Tuesday after a traders’ group reportedly blocked them from offloading their goods. The Regional Observatory of Onion in West and Central Africa said the vehicles were released on Friday following ECOWAS intervention. The move allowed the traders to deliver their consignments and prevented further financial losses. The group said the incident exposed continuing barriers to cross-border trade despite regional agreements on the free movement of goods. It called for a permanent framework for onion trade under existing West African and continental trade arrangements to prevent similar disputes.
