NDBDA MD Reflects on 2007 Election Battle, Salutes Tinubu’s Democratic Stance
Prince Ebitimi Amgbare, Managing Director/CEO of the Niger Delta Basin Development Authority, praised President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to constitutional democracy as he marked Democracy Day in Abuja. He recalled the flawed 2007 Bayelsa governorship election and the Appeal Court judgment that annulled the result, crediting Tinubu’s support within the Action Congress. Amgbare emphasised that democracy goes beyond casting votes; it must be defended through the rule of law. He noted that in 2007 they challenged electoral irregularities in court instead of resorting to violence, setting a precedent for opposition through petitions and evidence rather than thuggery. Highlighting his role in the Coalition of Democrats for Electoral Reform, Amgbare commended Tinubu’s backing of key reforms under President Yar’Adua—such as amendments to the Electoral Act, voter register integrity, and INEC independence. He urged continued respect for judicial decisions as the foundation of Nigeria’s democracy.
