MTN Explains Why Cheap Unlimited Data Isn’t Feasible in Nigeria

MTN Explains Why Cheap Unlimited Data Isn’t Feasible in Nigeria

MTN Nigeria’s CEO says truly unlimited mobile data at low prices would strain network quality. He explained that offering unlimited plans without usage limits or fair-use policies isn’t practical unless prices are very high. No operator worldwide can support every customer using unlimited data simultaneously while maintaining a reliable service. MTN likened cheap unlimited data to offering unlimited flights at rock-bottom fares – unsustainable for infrastructure investment. To help customers understand data consumption and resolve billing concerns, MTN has launched a “Data on Trial” initiative. This programme lets users track how their data is used and flag issues directly with the technical team to identify technical faults or misunderstandings.

Do you think mobile operators could ever offer truly unlimited data in Nigeria without hiking prices that much?

Which monthly fee would you see as reasonable if data caps are removed?

MTN's point about network quality strain really hits home, since no global operator supports unlimited plans without limits.

I get fairness concerns, but customers might prefer a flat fee even if speeds slow after a threshold.

Maybe operators should introduce tiered unlimited plans with soft data caps to balance usage demands and network performance.
