Abia Governor to Immortalise 1929 Aba Women’s Uprising with Monument

Abia Governor to Immortalise 1929 Aba Women’s Uprising with Monument

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has announced plans to build a permanent monument in honour of the heroines of the 1929 Aba Women’s Uprising. He made this pledge during the burial ceremony of Chiamaka Joyce Ibekwe, wife of Bende North lawmaker Nnamdi Ibekwe, in Igbere. Otti said the monument will recognise the historic contributions of those brave women and serve as encouragement to future generations. He expressed gratitude to the lawmaker for championing the request on behalf of all Abia women. The governor emphasised that Abia women have always played vital roles in society. He noted that this recognition will help correct past oversights and celebrate women’s enduring impact on the state’s history.

Perhaps the state could combine the monument unveiling with workshops or school programs that teach students about the 1929 uprising's lessons for civic engagement.
