UEFA Slaps Benfica’s Prestianni with Six-Match Ban Over Homophobic Insult at Vinícius Jr.

UEFA Slaps Benfica’s Prestianni with Six-Match Ban Over Homophobic Insult at Vinícius Jr.

Argentine winger Gianluca Prestianni will miss three matches immediately after UEFA upheld a six-game ban for homophobic insults directed at Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior. Three of the six fixtures are suspended for two years on probation, and Prestianni has already served one match at the Santiago Bernabéu, leaving two games to serve. The sanction follows an investigation into discriminatory conduct during Benfica’s Champions League play-off tie. In the first leg, referee François Letexier halted play under the anti-racism protocol when Vinícius accused Prestianni of offensive remarks. Despite Prestianni’s denial, UEFA confirmed the full suspension and clarified that the remaining matches can be served in European competition or with Argentina.

Do you think UEFA's six-match ban for Prestianni will effectively discourage future homophobic remarks on the pitch?

Definitely. A firm punishment like that shows UEFA won't tolerate hate speech, so players will think twice.

Six games ban cool, but doubt e go stop bad talk if no proper mindset change inside clubs.

UEFA's choice to suspend three of the six matches on probation feels more symbolic than punitive.

I'm not convinced the punishment fits the offense when the player already missed one game and still faces minimal impact.

Teams must incorporate compulsory workshops on respect and inclusion to prevent discriminatory behavior before it escalates on the field.
