APC Primaries Shock: Anti-Defection Law Costs Key Senators Their Tickets
Several serving APC senators lost their return tickets in the 2027 senatorial primaries after new anti-defection rules in the Electoral Act 2026 caught up with architects of the law. Notable defeats included Senator Ned Nwoko (Delta North) losing to former governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Senator Neda Imasuen (Edo South) falling to Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, and Senator Jibrin Isah (Kogi East) edged out by Dr. Erico Ameh. Others were disqualified at the screening stage. The anti-defection amendment, introduced to block last-minute party switches after registration with INEC, was expected to trap opposition defectors. Instead, it ensnared several APC incumbents who believed the measure targeted rivals. Section 83 now bars any party hopping once membership lists are submitted for an election cycle. Despite the upsets, some high-profile senators secured tickets through consensus or affirmation. Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele all emerged unopposed in their districts. Other incumbents in Borno, Yobe, Abia and Lagos also won endorsements, while results from many states remain pending. The exercise was marred by violence and disputes in states like Ondo and Rivers, where allegations of thuggery, intimidation and petitioned calls for reruns have surfaced. In contrast, primaries in Lagos and parts of the Southwest were largely peaceful, underscoring deep divisions and the challenges ahead for party unity.
