LAWMA Cracks Down on Illegal Dumping in Alimosho: Offenders Arrested, Properties Sealed

LAWMA Cracks Down on Illegal Dumping in Alimosho: Offenders Arrested, Properties Sealed

The Lagos Waste Management Authority has stepped up enforcement in Alimosho and neighbouring council areas. The Project W.I.S.E (West) team targeted illegal dumping and indiscriminate waste disposal. During a night operation at Ikotun-Egbe roundabout, a 15-year-old was arrested and handed to the Oshodi task force. Enforcement officers also sealed a car lot at Iroko Estate and a furniture showroom on LASU-Isheri Road for discharging waste into drainage channels. LAWMA issued a notice to seal a mini store in Diamond Estate for failing to use registered waste handlers. Residents on Kaslat/Sarumi Street reported a gated plot used as an illegal dumpsite. The agency sealed the site and arrested a 65-year-old security guard. Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin reiterated that dumping, burning refuse, and hiring unregistered handlers are offences under state environmental laws. He urged residents to engage accredited operators and report violations through official channels.

It's surprising that LAWMA focused on a teenager's arrest. Community habits seem more entrenched than one night operation suggests.

Sealing properties feels heavy-handed if community awareness campaigns could prevent dumping more effectively than punitive action.

Neighbouring councils should partner with LAWMA to set up regular clean-up days and monitoring teams in high dumping areas.
