Wives of Detained Officers Allege Torture, Demand Public Trial Over Alleged Coup Plot

Wives of Detained Officers Allege Torture, Demand Public Trial Over Alleged Coup Plot

Wives and family members of officers detained over the alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu accuse the military of torture, secret detention and denial of legal access for more than 180 days. At a press briefing in Abuja, they demanded an open trial, media access and permission for international human rights observers to monitor proceedings. They say the truth about the case is being suppressed and call for full medical reports on the accused. The families claim prolonged underground detention has led to health complications, including deteriorating eyesight and respiratory problems. They allege no lawyer or relative saw the officers for over 180 days despite repeated appeals. They urge the military to present irrefutable evidence if available and allow independent scrutiny. Six officers and former Minister Timipre Sylva face treason and terrorism charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
