INEC Stands by Chairman, Counters Removal Calls and Clarifies Voter Revalidation

The Independent National Electoral Commission has dismissed calls to remove its chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN). In a statement issued from Abuja, INEC said the appeal for his ouster ignores the constitutional safeguards that protect its leadership. INEC stressed that Section 157 of the 1999 Constitution governs the appointment and removal of its chairman. It explained that compliance with a recent Court of Appeal judgment was necessary to avoid legal setbacks like those in Zamfara and Plateau States. The commission also detailed its planned voter revalidation exercise. This administrative process will confirm the status of registered voters and strengthen the integrity of the voters’ register ahead of the Ekiti and Osun off-cycle elections.

What impact do you think INEC's stance on protecting its chairman might have on public trust in the election process?

Do you think defending the chairman might actually fuel more suspicion rather than bolster confidence?

It's interesting that INEC refers to constitutional safeguards rather than addressing the substance of the removal calls directly.

I'm not convinced using legal protections alone resolves concerns about leadership accountability within INEC.

Perhaps a transparent review of the voter revalidation process could reassure stakeholders instead of getting stuck on chairmanship disputes.
