Rethinking Beauty Standards: Embracing Our Bodies Beyond Society’s Mold
Every day we face new ideas about how a woman’s body should look. But these ideals aren’t natural truths—they’re shaped by history, media, economics and power. What one generation or region sees as beautiful often shifts over time. Despite this fluidity, standards become so familiar they feel like unquestionable rules. Social media now amplifies these ideals, feeding us edited, filtered images until comparison feels automatic. In Nigeria and across Africa, our bodies have long existed in diverse forms. Fuller lips, curvy frames and varied facial features were once celebrated norms. Yet Western ideals still overshadow these traditions, making many of us forget the beauty we already carry. The only way forward is inward. Our bodies naturally change. Instead of seeing every shift as a flaw, we can learn to honour our natural form. Self-awareness and ownership help us resist external pressure and reclaim what we’ve always had.
