CAF Unveils Major Reforms to Strengthen Referee and VAR Integrity
The Confederation of African Football has unveiled wide-ranging reforms to its statutes and regulations. These measures aim to restore trust in referees, VAR operators, match commissioners, and its judicial bodies. The changes come after controversies at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final in Morocco. CAF will appoint top judges and lawyers, nominated by all 54 member associations and zonal unions, to its Disciplinary and Appeal Boards. CAF President Patrice Motsepe says the reforms were developed with leading legal and football experts. CAF will collaborate with FIFA to train and professionalise officials, ensuring they meet global best practices and are fairly compensated. The organisation reaffirms zero tolerance for corruption and total impartiality. It notes that issues from the Morocco 2025 final are before the Court of Arbitration for Sport, as it focuses on ongoing competitions and 2026 World Cup preparations.
