Iru Ekun Security Network: Genuine Protection or Political Instrument?
In my last article, I urged the rescue of students and teachers abducted in Oriire, Oyo State. Their plight cast a shadow over Children’s Day, prompting widespread calls for the federal government to act. Shortly after, Sunday Igboho said he’s waiting for federal approval to launch the Iru Ekun Security Network. Given his past endorsements of political candidates, many wonder if this group can remain neutral and earn public trust. Nigeria already has police, military, DSS and other agencies. Before approving a new outfit, should we first fully equip, fund and reform these institutions instead of empowering a partisan network? Any decision on Iru Ekun deserves broad consultation, clear oversight and safeguards against political misuse. Security efforts must unite Nigerians, not deepen divisions.
