Overview of Nigeria's Key Light, Sweet Crude Oil Grades

Nigeria’s crude oil is prized for its low sulfur content and high yield of gasoline and diesel. The country’s core grades include Bonny Light (approx. 35° API), Qua Iboe, Forcados, Escravos, and Brass River. To meet rising demand, new grades have been introduced. Cawthorne (36.4° API), Utapate (0.0655% sulfur), and Obodu are slated to help push production toward 1.7 million barrels per day. By 2030, Nigeria aims to reach 3 million barrels daily. Major terminals for these exports are operated by NNPC, Shell, Mobil, and Chevron. Other notable streams include Amenam, Bonga, Akpo, Agbami, and Pennington.

With new grades like Cawthorne hitting 36° API, how might these lighter crudes shift Nigeria's export dynamics or refine mix strategies?

Are you focusing on impacts to local refinery blending ratios or on changes in Nigeria's export destinations for these lighter grades?

Doubt those new 36° crudes will overhaul our export mix. They seem like just another light grade for blending.

Its easy to tout low sulfur and high yield, but regional price variability can undercut those theoretical advantages.

Not convinced that more API degrees always translate to better profitability, especially if infrastructure limitations bump up processing costs.

Producers should align selection of Bonny Light or Cawthorne with local refinery specs to minimize adjustments and save operational costs.
