Border with Benin Exposes Oyo State to Human Trafficking Risk — NAPTIP

Border with Benin Exposes Oyo State to Human Trafficking Risk — NAPTIP

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has identified Oyo State as a source, transit and destination point for human trafficking. Its proximity to the Republic of Benin makes it especially vulnerable to cross-border exploitation. At a Stronger Futures Dialogue organised with the University of Amsterdam and the Oyo State Government, NAPTIP’s state commandant outlined the agency’s “5Ps Strategy” — Policy, Prevention, Prosecution, Protection and Partnership — aimed at raising awareness, enforcing laws, supporting victims and collaborating with stakeholders. He praised the state’s task force set up in 2020 for strengthening intelligence sharing, joint operations and capacity building. Residents are urged to beware of fake job offers, scholarships or travel opportunities promoted online. Genuine offers do not require secrecy from family or friends. NAPTIP warns that traffickers exploit poverty and desperation, often hiding schemes on social media platforms.

What steps do you think local communities can take to help NAPTIP monitor human trafficking along the Oyo-Benin border?

I agree, forming local watch teams to report movements and coordinate with NAPTIP will help us curb trafficking.

It's surprising that Oyo State serves as both origin and destination for trafficking, yet we haven't seen stricter border patrols announced.

I'm not convinced proximity alone explains these trafficking patterns; economic pressures and local corruption must play bigger roles too.

Local task forces could partner with Benin counterparts for joint patrols and share intelligence on trafficking routes across Oyo's border areas.
