Okonjo-Iweala, Ihedioha or Amaechi? Atiku’s Dilemma for 2027 Running Mate

Okonjo-Iweala, Ihedioha or Amaechi? Atiku’s Dilemma for 2027 Running Mate

Atiku Abubakar has secured the ADC presidential ticket for 2027 and now faces a crucial choice. He previously teamed up with Peter Obi in 2019 and Ifeanyi Okowa in 2023. This time, Southeast names like Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Emeka Ihedioha top the speculations. Okonjo-Iweala has declined the offer, choosing to complete her term as WTO Director-General through 2029. Ihedioha, former Imo State governor and ex-Speaker of the House, remains under consideration. Reports also link Atiku to closed-door discussions with Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State. Some APC voices argue that a Southeast running mate won’t shift votes given Peter Obi’s regional influence. Atiku’s camp insists the decision will be based on competence and national interest. Legal experts add that a Southeast pick could boost national cohesion and counter rival sway in the region.
