Court Denies Bauchi Accountant General’s Hajj Trip Request During N1.6bn Fraud Trial

Court Denies Bauchi Accountant General’s Hajj Trip Request During N1.6bn Fraud Trial

Justice O.A. Egwuatu of the Federal High Court in Abuja refused Bauchi State Accountant General Sirajo Muhammad Jaja’s application to travel to Saudi Arabia for Hajj and medical checks while facing trial for alleged N1.6bn money laundering. Jaja is jointly charged by the EFCC with an unlicensed forex operator on five counts of converting and laundering N1,635,270,350.9. His counsel, Chris Uche SAN, had asked for temporary release of Jaja’s passport for a two-week trip. The prosecution, led by Abba Muhammed SAN, opposed the motion, labelling Jaja a flight risk. The judge struck out the application and adjourned the trial to June 30, 2026, for continuation.

It's telling that the court prioritizes trial proceedings over his religious pilgrimage, even with medical check claims on the table.

I'm not convinced denial of a trip equates to fair justice; exceptional cases might justify a temporary leave for health reasons.

Authorities should implement transparent guidelines for travel requests during trials to balance judicial integrity with defendants' health and religious needs.
