My Confession: I’ve Been Stealing from My Dad for Years—and I Won’t Stop
I’m 29 and have been taking money from my father since I was 15. What started with a few naira in his suit pocket now happens so often I’ve lost count—and I have no plans to stop. My dad is known in church as “Animashaun,” the most generous man around. He’ll pay strangers’ school fees or donate food, yet at home he tightens the purse strings whenever he’s upset. Growing up, our house was huge but often empty, and allowances vanished whenever my parents fought. Resentment built up over the years as I watched him refuse us but give freely to others. I started with small change, then moved on to data plans and imaginary school fees. In university, I even convinced him to invest in crypto so I could manage the funds—and pocketed the profits when I claimed the market crashed. I don’t steal out of need—I do it to get back at him. Every time he headlines in the community for his charity, I remind myself there’s still money at home waiting for me. Why? Because I don’t trust he’ll leave any of it to us when he’s gone. I’m just claiming what I think is rightfully mine.
