Tinubu Greenlights ₦68bn Funding for Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant

Governor Babagana Zulum has thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving ₦68 billion in operational support for the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant. The funds will be disbursed as ₦2 billion each month from March 2026 to December 2028 to bridge the existing funding gap. Launched in 2021 after insurgents vandalised critical infrastructure, the plant was upgraded to a 50 MW capacity in December 2023. It has since played a key role in restoring electricity, reviving economic activities and improving livelihoods in Borno State. In a statement, Governor Zulum described the intervention as timely and impactful, saying it will strengthen ongoing efforts to support security and drive further development across the state.

Does this funding plan for the Maiduguri power plant improve long-term stability, or will monthly disbursement delays still hamper operations?

Funding of ₦2bn monthly over three years seems sizable, but bureaucratic hurdles and security issues might still limit the plant's efficiency.

We've seen big allocations expire without real progress; this stretched funding timeline could leave critical repairs unfunded by the time it matters most.

Local contractors and managers should set clear quarterly goals to track fund usage, ensuring any shortfalls or delays are flagged immediately.
