Spanish Urban Planning Experts Land in Awka to Kick Off AfDB African Cities Programme
Spanish urban planning experts from Acciona arrived in Awka to begin implementation of the African Cities Programme backed by the African Development Bank. They met with the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) and state officials to map out strategic stakeholder engagements. Key members include Elisa Maceratini and Carolina Ferrandis from Acciona, alongside local urban specialists like Tpl. Mohammad Yari and Tpl. Onyinyechi Egbuna. They discussed priorities such as mass housing, a BRT system, e-governance expansion, reforestation, water supply, waste-to-wealth initiatives, sustainable power, and tourism infrastructure. Officials described the programme as a milestone for Awka, the first Nigerian city selected for the continental scheme. The team will conduct city diagnostics and stakeholder consultations over several months to produce a City Action Plan and generate bankable projects for international financing. A technical workshop is scheduled at ACTDA headquarters later this week to refine investment areas and deepen institutional collaboration. The initiative aims to transform Awka into a smart, sustainable, and investment-ready capital.
