Ex-Super Eagles Defender Names Morocco, Senegal and Ivory Coast as 2026 World Cup Shock Contenders

Ex-Super Eagles Defender Names Morocco, Senegal and Ivory Coast as 2026 World Cup Shock Contenders

Former Super Eagles and Nice defender Onyekachi Apam has shared his view on Africa’s 2026 World Cup hopes. The tournament, hosted by the US, Mexico and Canada, will feature 48 teams and double Africa’s slots to ten. Apam named Morocco as the continent’s leading dark horse, citing their historic fourth-place finish in Qatar. He also backed Senegal’s star-studded squad led by Sadio Mané and Iliman Ndiaye. He believes a revitalised Ivory Coast side, fresh from a friendly win over France, can cause an upset. With more African teams in the finals, Apam’s bold predictions are poised for a major test.

Sure, Morocco and Senegal have strong squads, but doubling Africa's slots might water down overall competition quality.

I'm not convinced Ivory Coast can keep up pace against top European or South American teams at a bigger tournament.

African federations should use this extra slot boost to invest in youth development and friendly matches for better 2026 readiness.
