Underage Aspirant: How a 15-Year-Old APC Member Faked His Age to Run for Parliament
Sadisu Mahmud, a 15-year-old member of the APC, caused a stir by submitting nomination forms for the Sabon Gari Federal Constituency seat in Kaduna State. He claimed to be 30 and to meet the constitutional age requirement of 25. A recent investigation by a national daily found that his birth certificate and NIMC records show he was born on August 27, 2010. He had presented forged documents stating he was born on August 2, 1995, and even said he was married. Mahmud’s false age claims initially earned praise from senior party leaders, including the Senate President and the Vice President. Under Nigeria’s constitution, anyone under 25 cannot stand for the House of Representatives, raising questions about INEC’s screening processes.
