Ex-Petroleum Minister Sylva, Six Others to Face Court Over Alleged Coup Plot
The Federal Government will arraign six individuals in Abuja today over an alleged plot to overthrow the state. Ex-Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Timipre Sylva is named in the charge but remains at large. The defendants include retired Major General Mohammed Ibrahim Gana, retired Naval Captain Erasmus Ochegobia Victor, Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, Zekeri Umoru, Bukar Kashim Goni and Abdulkadir Sani. They will appear before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik at the Federal High Court. They face multiple counts filed by the Office of the Attorney-General, including conspiracy to levy war, attempted treason, financing terrorism, money laundering and failure to report or prevent treasonable acts. This arraignment follows months of investigations into the alleged coup plot. The military has also set up a court martial for serving officers arrested last year. Families of some detained personnel have been granted access to legal counsel for the first time since their detention.
