Nigerians Reject INEC’s Self-Investigation, Demand Independent Probe
Nigerians have overwhelmingly rejected INEC’s self-conducted forensic probe that cleared its chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan SAN. Critics cite the legal maxim nemo judex in causa sua, arguing that the commission cannot impartially judge its own case. Social media users on X and Instagram labelled the process farcical and insisted on an independent inquiry. They noted that INEC appointed the panel, authorised payment, received the report and announced the findings. The controversy began with a “Victory is sure” post linked to an APC-aligned account. Former NHRC chairman Chidi Odinkalu and SERAP have called for an external investigation, while Senate President Godswill Akpabio confirmed the tweet’s authenticity. Many Nigerians now question INEC’s competence to conduct digital forensic investigations. They say a neutral body should verify the evidence or that Amupitan should step aside pending a transparent probe.
