US Embassy and Lagos Consulate to Close on June 19 for Juneteenth Holiday

US Embassy and Lagos Consulate to Close on June 19 for Juneteenth Holiday

The United States Embassy in Abuja and its Consulate in Lagos will be closed on Friday, June 19, 2026, in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day. All routine consular and diplomatic services, including visa appointments and passport processing, will be suspended for the holiday. Emergency support will still be available. Normal operations will resume on Monday, June 22. Juneteenth marks the June 19, 1865 announcement of freedom for enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, and became a US federal holiday in 2021.

Good point. I'll shift my visa interview to the week before, just to avoid that holiday closure.

Suspending all routine consular services for just one day feels excessive when travel delays ripple across schedules.

A single day closure shouldn't derail your plans that much, you can probably rearrange appointments before or after the holiday.

Consider booking your visa appointment well before June 19 or opt for expedited processing afterward to avoid holiday backlogs.
