Saving Newspaper Vending: A Call for Urgent Intervention
Newspaper vending has long sustained families and ensured daily news reaches every corner of Nigeria. Vendors risk their lives in traffic and on the streets to keep information flowing. Despite this vital role, vendors face constant harassment. Motorists disdain them, government agents arrest them on flimsy grounds and many offices delay payments for months. These debts cripple the trade and push hardworking vendors into poverty. Media organizations and public offices must settle outstanding bills and review punitive policies that harm the industry. Stakeholders should reverse monetization measures, fund newspaper purchases in annual budgets and provide vendors with financial, medical and job support. The time to save this indispensable trade is now.
