Lawyer Seeks Prosecution of Ex-CCT Chairman Over Banex Plaza Assault

Lawyer Seeks Prosecution of Ex-CCT Chairman Over Banex Plaza Assault

A human rights lawyer has petitioned the Attorney General of the Federation to charge former Code of Conduct Tribunal chairman Umar Danladi over an alleged assault on Clement Sargwak at Banex Plaza, Wuse 2, Abuja. In a petition dated May 14, 2026, the lawyer asked the AGF to review video footage and witness statements. He cited Section 265 of the Penal Code Act and relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act. He urged the AGF to either file criminal charges or grant him leave for private prosecution. He warned that ignoring the incident could undermine public confidence in the justice system. “No person is above the law,” he said, stressing the need for proper court adjudication of serious allegations.

True, holding top figures accountable helps rebuild faith in courts and shows nobody is above the law.

It's notable that this petition focuses on alleged assault rather than any financial misconduct allegations the CCT chairman faced before.

Curious why the petition highlights only the assault but stays silent on the earlier financial misconduct allegations?

I worry this call for prosecution might be more about political point-scoring than genuine justice for the victim.

The Attorney General should ensure timely investigations, preserve all surveillance footage from Banex Plaza, and interview witnesses promptly to strengthen the case.
