How Governor Kefas’ Defection Turns Taraba into APC’s New North-East Stronghold

Taraba was once seen as a safe PDP state after the 2023 elections. Atiku Abubakar led with 189,017 votes, followed by Peter Obi’s 146,315 and Bola Tinubu’s 135,165. The real shift came when Governor Agbu Kefas and much of the PDP setup joined the APC. The Speaker and 15 lawmakers defected, flipping the entire 24-seat Assembly. Local chairmen, commissioners and grassroots operators also moved with the governor. This realignment weakens the argument that Taraba Christians can’t thrive in the APC. The narrow APC win in the 2025 Karim 1 bye-election was a warning. Kefas’s defection is the cannon shot. Taraba has become an APC target for 2027.

The huge PDP to APC shift feels sudden. History suggests local party structures don't turn overnight despite high-profile defections.

Are we sure this defection means lasting dominance? Regional politics often bounce back, and opposition might reorganize before the next polls.
