Ezekwesili Warns State Police Alone Can’t Tackle Insecurity, Calls for Full Restructuring

Former Education Minister Obiageli Ezekwesili has addressed an open letter to President Tinubu, the National Assembly and state governors. She argues that the push for state police will not resolve terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security challenges across Nigeria’s 230 million people. Using recent Afrobarometer data, she shows widespread fear and low confidence in state effectiveness. She warns that policing is a symptom, not the root problem. Ezekwesili calls for a comprehensive restructuring of Nigeria’s federal constitution and political economy to rebalance power and restore state capacity.

I'm not convinced Ezekwesili's open letter adds anything new; restructuring without funding and training won't magically improve security.

Prioritize transparent budgeting, equipment upgrades and community policing initiatives before rolling out state-level security agencies nationwide.
