Lagos APC Insists on Open Primaries, Rejects Imposed Candidate

Lagos APC Insists on Open Primaries, Rejects Imposed Candidate

Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos Mainland have rejected any attempt to grant automatic tickets. They insist that all aspirants must contest a transparent primary ahead of the 2027 general elections. Party leaders emphasised the need to uphold internal democracy. They stated that no aspirant will be favoured outside established party procedures. They also dismissed talk of factional divisions, affirming that the APC remains united. A recent “shadow primary” by a group called Mainland Voice polled four aspirants. Kazeem Omolaja led with 44 votes, followed by Rasheedat Essien with 26 and Moshood Oshun with eight. One aspirant received no valid votes. Stakeholders stressed that this exercise has no official status. Leaders confirmed there will be no consensus arrangement. All contenders must prove their popularity through formal primaries. Residents of Ebute-Metta West also decried longstanding marginalisation and urged party officials to ensure fairness and inclusiveness.

I doubt open primaries will uproot the real power brokers behind the scenes.

It's interesting that they reject imposed candidates but haven't clarified how they'll prevent internal vote rigging this time.

I'm not convinced open primaries alone can guarantee fairness; influence and money still shape outcomes far too often.

Perhaps forming independent oversight committees and clear guidelines for candidate vetting might boost transparency and curb backdoor deals.
