INEC Chair Calls for Stronger Legal Framework Against Digital Threats

INEC Chair Calls for Stronger Legal Framework Against Digital Threats

Prof. Joash Amupitan, INEC Chairman, urged Nigeria to adapt its laws for a rapidly evolving digital era. He spoke at the 47th Founders’ Day Lecture of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) in Lagos. Amupitan highlighted both the opportunities and risks of technology. He warned that misinformation, data breaches and unchecked AI could weaken democratic institutions. He stressed the need for forward-looking legislation and stronger collaboration among legal scholars, technologists and civil society. Keynote speaker Mr. Theodore Maiyaki (SAN) echoed the call for digital safeguards. He described the digital age as a paradox of empowerment and manipulation. He urged robust data protection, transparent AI use and continuous civic engagement to uphold democracy. The event celebrated NIALS’s role in legal research and policy support. Leaders praised its contributions to justice reform, capacity building and evidence-based dialogue on governance challenges in the digital era.
