Pele’s 1958 World Cup Final Jersey Fetches $4.9 Million at Auction
A historic jersey worn by Pele in the 1958 World Cup final sold for $4.9 million at a Sotheby’s auction in New York, according to BBC Sport. It is now the second most valuable football shirt ever sold, behind Diego Maradona’s 1986 ‘Hand of God’ match jersey, which fetched £7.1 million in 2022. The shirt drew ten bids from over five collectors and more than doubled its 2004 sale price of $105,600. Pele scored twice as a 17-year-old in that final against Sweden, helping Brazil claim their first World Cup title. He still holds the record as the youngest scorer in a World Cup final. “This sale highlights the enduring legacy of one of football’s greatest icons,” said Brendan Hawkes, Sotheby’s head of sports strategy. Other top lots in ‘The Beautiful Game’ auction included Maradona’s 1986 captain’s armband and jerseys worn by Lionel Messi and David Beckham in landmark matches.
