Brother Exhumes Sister’s Remains After Bank Refuses Withdrawal Without Account Holder

Brother Exhumes Sister’s Remains After Bank Refuses Withdrawal Without Account Holder

A man in Odisha reportedly exhumed his late sister’s remains and brought them to a bank after staff insisted the account holder appear in person before releasing funds. According to news reports, 50-year-old Jeetu Munda of Dianali village tried several times to withdraw ₹20,000 from his sister’s account after her death on January 26, 2026. Bank staff allegedly ignored his explanations and maintained their demand. In frustration and unaware of the legal nominee process, he dug up her grave and presented her skeleton at the Maliposi branch of Odisha Grameen Bank as proof of her passing. Police later arrived, criticised the bank for failing to explain the proper withdrawal procedure, and agreed to help him process the claim through legal channels. The remains were returned and reburied under police supervision.

While tragic, exhuming a sibling's remains over twenty thousand rupees seems disproportionate; surely there were legal paths less macabre.
